Solving for Science Publishing Campaign

Who We Are Looking For
Solving For Science is looking for a freelance scientific editor / project manager for an exciting pilot program to fix scientific publishing, Discovery Stack. The Editor will serve a critical role in the project management and the success of the pilot, reporting to the Executive Director of Solving For Science and working closely with members of the campaign, many of whom are principal investigators in immunology, with our Solving For Science community members and volunteer reviewers, and with our partners at bioRXIV.
The project is currently broken into three phases over the next year. We are currently recruiting for Phase 1, which is expected to run four months from July through October 2024. Phases 2 and 3 are expected to follow soon after, and there is the possibility of this position being renewed for the two additional phases which would run into 2025.
Scientific Editor Responsibilities
- Oversee pilot review process for 48 manuscripts over approximately 12 weeks
- Reviewer recruitment and matching to manuscripts
- Manuscript tracking from initial invitations to chasing reviews and sending out subsequent waves to new reviewers
- Learn a novel review platform and manage reviewer interaction with it
- Learn and manage relationship with project-specific technology: Hypothes.is
- Train & help study participants navigate the use of Hypothes.is
- Data tracking within Hypothes.is and participant rubrics
- Manage feedback consolidation and report on the process and platform for study participants
- Solicitation and consolidation of participant surveys on workflow efficiency
- Review feedback and compile report on suggestions for improvement
Desired Qualifications
Ideally, we want:
- An experienced editor for scientific journals, ideally with experience handling immunology or cancer biology papers
- A highly organized and adept project manager
- A skilled and efficient knowledge worker who eagerly adopts new technologies
- A problem-solver and a team player
- An experienced scientist, science communicator, or other professional experience within or in support of academia

Start date: On or before July 1, 2024
Location: San Francisco Bay Area or remote.
Compensation: This is a contract position role with an expected duration of 4 months with compensation starting at $20,000, commensurate with experience. Should the pilot continue through two more phases, each of the two additional phases would be compensated at the same rate.
