I am currently an Assistant Professor at CSHL where I currently supervise two postdocs, five graduate students, two research technicians and one clinical fellow. My mentoring philosophy involves patience, teamwork, rewarding curiosity, stimulating critical thinking and respect to others. I promote an inclusive research environment and support scientists from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented or minority populations. I put significant amount of time and effort for teaching everyone in my lab the ethical, responsible, collaborative and rigorous conduct of research. I developed this vision thanks to my previous training starting from being an undergraduate researcher with extremely limited resources in Turkey to completing my PhD studies at Harvard Immunology PhD Program where I learned how to be fearless, resourceful, collaborative and rigorous. I was recruited to CSHL right after finishing my PhD as an independent fellow considering the productivity during my PhD studies where I gained significant expertise in the fields of immunology, epigenetics, stem cell biology and metabolism through synergistic collaborations. These complementary areas of expertise allowed me to pursue my current vision for understanding the fundamental principles that govern how nutrient – gene interactions influence organismal biology at cellular and molecular level by focusing on interactions between stem cells, immune cells and microbes in mucosal tissues.
