Solving For Science was created by and for busy PIs as a flexible system of support and resources they could rely on to organize and advance the changes in the culture of science they want to see. By connecting community around these efforts, we make sure change can happen no matter how little time PIs have when they’re busy…as long as they can help out when and how they are able when they’re a little LESS busy. We’re looking at a long game so we offer space and roles for PIs and others to make contributions with as much time as they can spare, when they can.

Our Mission
Solving For Science builds community and capacity among working scientists so they can use the power of their networks to tackle consequential problems in the culture of science. We help them design and execute experiments, pilots, and programs that test and pursue new paradigms to Make Science Better.
Our Ethos
Our members are not only the reason WHY we do what we do — they are HOW the change happens. Every shift this community achieves will be because members raised the issue, proposed the solution, built the pilot, and shared the playbook.

We don't want membership fees. We want working scientists to bring their ideas about what they want to make happen and to commit using the time they can spare to help make them happen. We want the efforts they can offer from inside their labs to get them to become durable, irreversible, and finally invisible.

Can a busy PI be a member?
Why should I become a member?
- Because you'll join a community of colleagues committed to action, not just conversation.
- Because you know collective community is how change happens from within — and that’s why you’re here.
- Because you'll work alongside colleagues and friends who want the same future for science that you do to make it happen.
- Because the people in this community are genuinely great, and you'll meet even more of them.
How can I become a member?
Membership in Solving For Science grows at the speed of trust. Here is what it takes.
- You need a referral from a current member — someone who knows you and believes you belong here. Contact us if you want to know members in your area.
- You need to read, commit to and sign our Ethos statement. This is not a formality. We’ll hold you to it.
- You need to commit to showing up — as a participant, a host, a leader, or an enthusiastic troublemaker — at least three times each year.
- You need to pitch in: to your local community hub, to other members' projects, to the larger mission.
What is the membership fee?
There is no fee. 'Paying your dues' means something entirely different here. We want your time. Your ideas. Your commitment. Your YOU. That said — this is a nonprofit, and while we’re as scrappy as we can be, we do need to raise some money to keep it going. We’re open to all your suggestions, connections, and crazy ideas. T-shirts, bake sales, introductions to donors — we'll take it all.
What are the benefits of membership?
- Invitations to local dinners, workshops, and other events and social gatherings at your institution or hub:
- Invitations to private updates and policy briefings with scientists, funders, and policymakers doing consequential work
- Inclusion in SolvingFor community events at big conventions, cross-hub collaborations, and cross-disciplinary connections.
- Access to the member-only resources, briefings, and Project Playbooks where all can share and contribute to successful pilot projects.
- Access to private Slack channels and member-only digital spaces as well as our monthly newsletter
- Eligibility to apply to be a Hub Host and get a grant to host a dinner
- Eligibility to join a Project group or to pitch a new idea
- Eligibility to apply for Solving For Science seed grants to test your ideas
- Support in developing, launching, and scaling new pilot projects
- Recognition: we celebrate active members and amplify the work you're doing
What are the responsibilities?
Attend at least three things per year. Sign and commit to the Ethos. Pitch in to your local community hub. Refer people you trust. Cheer on your colleagues and talk up their work. Take action with what you have where you are. That’s the baseline. The rest is up to you.
What does Solving For Science do?
It is easier to say what we don't do. We look for ways to support what you want to do. We don't command from the top down. We don't issue narrow RFPs for what we want to happen. We listen to what you want to do — and help you do that, better. We help you develop your ideas into pilots that are small enough to do, big enough to matter. We connect you with people who might help. We provide seed funding where it makes sense. We publish case studies and playbooks. We hold workshops in engagement and leadership. We keep the community informed, engaged, delighted and inspired. We fundraise. We move money quickly when we have it. We amplify the good stuff strategically and generously. And we make time to keep showing up even when you can’t to keep your efforts moving forward.
Are Solving For Science members only immunologists?
Solving For Science started with immunologists and cancer immuno-therapists — just because that is who we are and who we know. For now we’re focused on scaling deep with our immediate communities, but if you are from another discipline and want to start a new branch, we want to hear from you. We’ll help you build your cohorts and hubs so we can meet you soon!
