At ImmunoSkamania 2024, Richard Sever, Ph.D., the assistant director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press and co-founder of the preprint servers bioRxiv and medRxiv, gave a scintillating talk on the history of scientific publishing and peer review.
- How old is our current “tradition” of peer review?
- How were things done before?
- Where is scientific publishing headed?

Join this meeting to:
- Hear updates on the progress of the Discovery Stack Pilot study.
- Learn about the Discovery Stack workflow.
- Discover the potential of a “Peer Improvement” review model.
- Ask questions or offer suggestions regarding the Discovery Stack model.
Peer Improvement Review is a model in which reviewers evaluate the scientific quality and rigor of a manuscript, aiming to provide feedback that helps the authors improve their work.
A Peer Improver focuses on the following areas of scientific quality:
Conclusions
-Are the conclusions supported by the data presented in the paper? Â
-Suggest ways to clarify conclusions so they align with the data, or indicate additional experiments required to support the conclusions.
Experimental Design
-Do the experiments include proper controls?
-Have the authors used appropriate methodology and statistical analysis?
Data Integrity
-Were the experiments sufficiently repeated?
-Is the sample size or number of subjects per group adequate?
A Peer Improvement model based on constructive and actionable feedback aims to:
1. Improve manuscript quality.
2. Enhance scientific rigor to promote reproducibility.
3. Foster camaraderie and collaboration.
The Discovery Stack Pilot study is designed to test a workflow that embodies this Peer Improvement model. It is the first step toward building a platform where scientific quality and potential impact are recognized independently of journal branding.
Discovery Stack Pilot at CICON24
The Cancer Research Institute (CRI) and the European Network for Cancer Immunotherapy (ENCI) are presenting the Eighth International Cancer lmmunotherapy Conference (CICON24) from September 8-11, 2024, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, MD (minutes from Washington, DC). The program will focus on "Translating Science into Survival," and feature talks from leaders in the field covering all areas of inquiry in cancer immunology and immunotherapy.
In nine sessions, CICON24 will cover the breadth of the field exploring neoadjuvant and platform trials mechanistic insights in multiomic data analysis, tertiary lymphoid aggregates as regulators of anti-cancer immunity, cancer interception, inflammation, metabolism, the microbiome, personalized therapies, and new tools, technologies and approaches in the field aimed at leveraging AI in cancer immunotherapy. CICON24 includes 35 plenary lectures from the field’s leaders, apanel discussion, 15 proffered talks selected from among an outstanding crop of submitted abstracts, multiple poster sessions, exhibits, and numerous opportunities for networking and collaboration.
